Dear Rita and Luc,<\/p>\n

A Workshop and a Surprise Party<\/p>\n

How time flies\u2014Saturday evening already, the night before our departure home\u2026 but before we celebrate together, I\u2019d like to reflect on the past week with you.<\/p>\n

The origin of our stay at Domaine Barreaux this week undoubtedly goes back to an OFYR workshop in 2020 and a surprise party for Ingrid in November 2022, both organized by STOKE. Perhaps not entirely coincidentally, earlier this year the offer for \u2018The OFYR Experience\u2019 at Domaine Barreaux appeared on Facebook. Facebook\u2019s search engine had done its job.<\/p>\n

Such an \u2018OFYR Experience Week\u2019\u2026 that sounded just right\u2026 so I decided to inquire. I still remember that first phone call with Rita well\u2014I called from a French number, and you seemed surprised at how I got it! A lovely chat over the phone\u2026 you shared your story openly, and immediately there was a nice connection. Common interests came up: B&Bs (you in France, we soon in Turnhout), OFYR, and Harley-Davidson. During that conversation, it also became clear that \u2018De Guy and Fabie\u2019 would be present for the entire OFYR week\u2026 we couldn\u2019t get closer to the OFYR master himself and his \u201cBieke\u201d\u2026 so we booked that week!<\/p>\n

Barreaux 2.0, christened with wine<\/strong><\/p>\n

A two-day journey with the motorhome, via the Champagne region, brought us here on Monday. Welcome from 4 PM\u2026 which eventually became 7 PM, but in true French style: \u201cNo problem, we\u2019re still having aperitifs!\u201d<\/p>\n

Host Luc greeted us at the front door and welcomed us with the news that no rooms were available, but we could sleep in the motorhome\u2026 the tone was set. It was the opening line of a fantastic week full of fun, food, drinks, warmth, and wonderful people.<\/p>\n

You and your friends had worked incredibly hard to prepare and refresh Domaine Barreaux for the arrival of the first guests.<\/p>\n

We were privileged witnesses to the kickoff of a new adventure, a dream in your lives. Together with everyone present, we christened this week \u2018Barreaux 2.0\u2019\u2026 not with champagne, but with wine\u2014lots of wine\u2026 10 to 15 liters per day, if I remember correctly.<\/p>\n

Cheers to life<\/strong><\/p>\n

The weather wasn\u2019t ideal\u2026 it wasn\u2019t a warm, sunny week. Instead, clouds arrived with a cold northern wind, but by the end of the week we had sunny mornings and warmer afternoons. During a visit to the bar \u201cLe Coupon,\u201d the owner Dennis even put a log in his stove. He told us that in all the years he\u2019s lived in France, he had never used his wood stove in May. But as the saying goes, \u201cyou have to make your own good weather,\u201d and that\u2019s exactly what we did together with the host family. And how!<\/p>\n

Rita, the charming hostess, who had been so eager to restart Domaine Barreaux. You are the embodiment of the kind, helpful lady who spoke with me on the phone back in January. You radiate warmth, love, and understanding.<\/p>\n

Luc, always ready to help\u2026 literally bringing warmth on Tuesday evening by lighting the fire pit. However, as a BMW rider, he struggled to light the \u2018Harley-Davidson fire pit\u2019 and had to call on a Harley rider for help. And that afternoon, he showed his kind heart again by helping me clean the front of the motorhome\u2026 with \u2018Savon Noir\u2019\u2026 which, according to Luc, is French for \u2018green soap.\u2019<\/p>\n

Toon and Nicky, what tireless workers\u2026 They spent the entire week making guests feel at home: breakfast, coffees, wines, even a sandwich for Ingrid when she was sick\u2026 nothing was too much.<\/p>\n

And of course, the ever-present dogs Loupie and Linga, calmly in the background\u2026 except when the drone takes off, the p\u00e9tanque court is in use, or you step on their paws.<\/p>\n

And the thought of Carlo is subtly present too\u2026 \u2018No present without a past,\u2019 a watchful bird of prey on the massive tree trunk, and on the outdoor counter, Carlo\u2019s life motto: \u2018Cheers to life.\u2019<\/p>\n

Too small for my weight<\/strong><\/p>\n

The main reason for our stay, of course, was the OFYR Experience\u2026 and did we get it!<\/p>\n

The OFYR master taught us that we need to stoke the fire for about 30 minutes before cooking, and that we should use small pieces of well-dried wood to avoid smoke. Building windshields with wood blocks, food bumpers, smoke and flame management, hot and very hot zones\u2026 all were explained.<\/p>\n

Over the week, we climbed the hierarchical ladder in the kitchen: Tuesday we helped clean the OFYR after use; Wednesday we chopped wood; and from Thursday, we were even helping the chef prepare dishes:<\/p>\n

    Asparagus soup with smoked eel, crispy asparagus tips cooked on the OFYR<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    Chicken liver with an oriental salad<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Caesar salad with OFYR-cooked chicken<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    C\u00f4te \u00e0 l\u2019os to die for<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Fish, shellfish, and seafood<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The OFYR master taught us that an OFYR is not a BBQ, but a cooking device. We got tips on using lots of oil, moistening hard vegetables twice, and most importantly: \u201cdare to experiment!\u201d<\/p>\n

    Based on my BMI, I was already too small for my weight, and that probably hasn\u2019t improved this week. I think next week I should remove the batteries from my talking scale.<\/p>\n

    Bibs and potty-talkers<\/strong><\/p>\n

    During more philosophical moments, we discussed that it\u2019s not what\u2019s under the Christmas tree that matters, but who sits around it. The same goes for an OFYR. This week, alongside the host family and OFYR master, there were also wonderful guests around the fire.<\/p>\n

    Peggy, who gifted an OFYR week to Filip. In daily life, she deals with finances and medication for cardiologists\u2026 but on weekends, she\u2019s devoted to her OFYR in her brand-new mancave.<\/p>\n

    The Dutch guests Gerry, Annelies, and Bas\u2026 with whom we debated language usage: the difference between \u201cmorning\u201d and \u201cforenoon,\u201d \u201cnoon\u201d and \u201cafternoon,\u201d \u201cbench\u201d and \u201csofa.\u201d We learned what a bib and a potty-talker are. We also discovered that, unlike Belgians, the Dutch do talk to lampposts.<\/p>\n

    On Wednesday, Big Koen and Little Koen with his family joined the group. By today, the two K2s had become full-fledged paella chefs, claiming they are also available for parties.<\/p>\n

    Live your dream<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Thank you for letting us be part of this. You filled not only our stomachs but also our hearts.<\/p>\n

    Domaine Barreaux is in our hearts, but also in our GPS. If we may leave you with one piece of advice:<\/p>\n

    Be confident in yourselves, in your concept\u2026 live your dream\u2026 we wish you a wonderful journey through life, with all the happiness it can bring.<\/strong><\/p>\n
